How to say “no” clearly and respectfully

A limit works best when it is brief, predictable, and paired with what the child can do next.

Get Started

Keep the message short

State the limit calmly, avoid repeated negotiation, and direct attention to the next available action.

Example: “No tablet now. First dinner, then tablet.”

A useful structure

Limit: what is not available.

Condition: one brief explanation when needed.

Alternative: what the child can do next.

Prepare

Give advance notice before a preferred activity ends.

Stay consistent

A limit that changes after escalation may teach escalation.

Reinforce recovery

Notice calm requests, waiting, and returning to routine.
